This has become quite a famous scarf, which was published many times in the twentieth century. It’s probably known now as Miss Marple’s scarf after it appeared in the TV series.

This knitting pattern version has larger flaps/ ends (well, what would you call them?) rather like leaves. It’s from Bestway Knitting Issue 116 from 1948, which was a right bugger to scan, as the pages were pretty tiny and the whole thing was tricky to hold open without damaging it. In the end I took a mixture of scan and phone photos. Here is a scan of the front cover showing the cravat in yellow.

Bestway KnittingThe pattern begins in the left hand column below and the continues in right column of the next photo, then ends in first photo right side column.

I’ve knitted this scarf so many times. Now I have been asked to knit one for a friend and I can’t find my pattern. Probably got lost in moving.

I am excited to find this, but I think the pattern continues beyond the right column as it ends in mid-sentence. Please advise and thanks so much for posting it.

It is a very short pattern and I’ve knitted it so I know it’s all there. The pattern begins in the left hand column of the first picture and the continues in right column of the second photo, then ends in back in the first photo right side column.

Thank you so much, and I’m sorry I didn’t pay more attention to your instructions. I am looking forward to making this!

I now understand the pattern thanks to Caroline Brooks comment. One question, the yarn suggested is fingering, however, it says size 10 needles …. this seems like an awfully large needle size for fingering weight yarn. Any suggestions on needle size if using fingering weight? is the cast on number the same as indicated in pattern? Thanks!

      It’s a UK 10, so a US 3 or 3.25mm.
