Year – 1940s/ WW2. Fair Isle like this was used when materials for clothing was rationed & scarce in the UK. Older damaged knitwear was unravelled and reknitted, or leftovers from other knitted items were used. The lack of yarn became a driving force of this decorative style being revived, having previously been popular in the 1920s. If you look at the Imperial War Museum website you can find more details about the national scheme to “Make do and Mend.” There were articles in women’s magazines, leaflets and local classes to teach the effective use of what little fabric and yarn were available.
